As someone who is passionate about music, I often find myself excited yet skeptical when a cd from a band I have been previously unaware of crosses my desk. It is exciting because I enjoy discovering new bands and music, but the skepticism comes in based on whether or not the music will appeal to me asthetically or not. I am in no way biased against any genre, but I can say with certainty that some hold more appeal than others.

I recently received a cd from a band that I was definitely skeptical about, but I have to admit they have caught my attention quickly. Having lived through the glory days of what is often described as “hair metal”, “glam metal”, or even “sleaze metal”, I can find it difficult to fully embrace new releases that cling to those roots. However, the new album from Bad Boy Eddy, titled “Over the Top” is an album chock full of 80’s sound, yet easy to enjoy.

The influences of the band shine through from the start of the album, and they are some of the biggest names in the music industry to have gained popularity during the “Hair Era”. It isn’t simply hair bands that can be heard as the album progresses however. There are many sounds and influences flowing together to form the perfect album for anyone who enjoys 80’s metal.

Some of the songs that best showcase the bands sound and talents would include “Fever”, “I Don’t Want You”, “Supersonic Freak”, and “Fly Away”. Combined, these run the gambit between hair, glam, sleaze, and beyond. I would even venture to say that fans of Rob Zombie or Marilyn Manson would be hard pressed not to find themselves enthralled with songs on the cd.

This is an album that should truly appeal to anyone who enjoys a rocking good time. If it isn’t in your music collection yet, get it!!! This is an album will quickly become a staple in your life once you listen to it.

It’s not often that a band releases an album that hits me like a ton of bricks, however Raven Lord has done just that. Their debut album, Descent To The Underworld released via Mausoleum Records, is a masterpiece of heavy metal music. From the opening chords, the influence of 80’s metal shines through. It is an album that is sure to attract the attention of many major record labels and heavy metal music fans.

Raven Lord combine a myriad of influences to create a behemoth of an album. Featuring former members of Blaze Bayley, Voodoo Highway, Killing Machine, Holy Hell, Operation X, and Tony Martin Band, it is easy to see why Raven Lord will surely rise to become one of the top bands in the industry.

The album opens with the track “The Rebel” which is reminiscent of bands such as Metal Church. With a thunder of drums, ear shattering guitar riffs, and vocals that synch together flawlessly, all is set to assault your ears like no other band in recent years has truly been capable of.

As the album continues, the hair on the back of my neck began to stand up as “Promised Land” began to play. It is a track with a quality not unlike classic Judas Priest. The progression between vocal ranges is one that is rare in most music.

Another track which speaks to the ability of the band is “Black Friar”. The almost thrash feel combined with technical guitar riffs is absolutely amazing. At times it was like listening to Megadeth and at others it were as if Yngwie Malmsteen were playing the riffs.

The overall mix of influences on the album will appeal to all metal music fans who enjoy an 80’s feel to their music. This si definitely an album to pick up once it is released on February 1, 2013.
